Live performances, great stories, children’s films, challenging games and books filled with excitement kickoff the 1st Millions More Movement Family Literacy Day: “Brightening Lives with Books”. All activities are designed to elevate interest in reading and encourage families to take time out to read together. Proceeds will assist in developing a library for Muhammad School of Islam. Scholastic Books will be on site along with a representative from Dallas Public Library signing up youth for the Mayor’s Summer Reading Program.
Performances by local artists such as: Griot Storyteller, Melody Afi and rising Hip Hop Educator, Alejandro Perez from the City of Dallas Office of Cultural Affairs; Kumaasi African Ensemble, directed by S-Ankh Rasa; Gregory McAdory, motivational speaker, and cartoonist of the great new comic book Dragon Ninja Clan; and the original play by Roots for Youth African Children’s Theater, Haitian Tales: Respe’ Pou Tout Moun (Respect for All People).
Listen to celebrities & community leaders take the stage to read their favorite stories to the attendees. Such as: NBA All-star, Larry Johnson; Cheryl Smith, Editor of Dallas Weekly newspaper; Marilyn Clark of Black Cinematheque; Leo Baron Hicks, Author of “The New Cotton”; Guinea Bennett-Price, former founder/director of Soul Rep Theater; Pastor Clarence Glover; Historian & Educational Director of The First African Freedom Church; and many, many others.
Come and enjoy a day of fun, food and entertainment as the youth participate in reading, language, and creative arts activities while they redeem prizes from reading challenges and cognitive games.
